Harrison Ford Plane Crash Report: Engine Lost Power


The National Transportation Safety Board has released its initial report about last week’s plane crash involving Harrison Ford. While the findings are “preliminary” and subject to change, they more or less reflect the situation as recounted by observers who saw Ford’s vintage aircraft crash at a California golf course last Thursday.

According to Tuesday’s NTSB report, Ford’s Ryan Aeronautical ST3KR “sustained substantial damage following a loss of engine power and subsequent forced landing.” It notes that the air traffic controller at Santa Monica Municipal Airport reported that after Ford took off, he advised the airport of his engine failure and requested an “immediate return.” He then made a left turn back to the airport, striking the top of a tree and ultimately hitting the ground at the golf course.



A loss of engine power is consistent with what some of the observers of Ford’s crash noted while taking video of the situation: The plane did not seem to be making noise as it descended. As Gossip Cop reported, the 72-year-old actor and longtime pilot was first attended to by a doctor who happened to be on the golf course at the time of the incident, and then rushed to the hospital. He underwent surgery for a broken ankle and pelvis. He’s expected to make a full recovery.
